On June 24, Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijeong met with Ha Jeongwoo, Senior Secretary for AI Future Planning, at the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul. During the meeting, Kang proposed several AI-related initiatives, including the establishment of a National AI Computing Center in Gwangju and the prompt implementation of the “AX Demonstration Valley (AI Phase 2)” project.
At the meeting, Mayor Kang stated, “Gwangju is a city equipped with the nation’s top-tier AI core infrastructure, including computing resources, companies, and talent essential for AI development. It is the optimal location for the concentration of public AI infrastructure.” He requested that the National AI Computing Center be established in Gwangju.
He also called for the swift implementation of the AX Demonstration Valley project. Kang urged, “Please ensure that the exemption from the preliminary feasibility study for the AX Demonstration Valley project, which was halted after the declaration of martial law, is approved in July so that the project can proceed normally starting next year.”
Going forward, Gwangju City plans to continue strengthening communication with the National Policy Planning Committee, the Presidential Office, and government ministries, centering on the “Presidential Election Pledge Seoul Situation Room,” to ensure that major pledges such as the “Establishment of a National AI Pilot City” are consistently reflected in national policy tasks.
