Co-hosted by HD Hyundai and Seoul National University... Held Over Three Days
Experts in naval architecture and ocean engineering from leading U.S. universities have visited shipbuilding sites in South Korea. These experts, who are in Korea to attend the "Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Expert Forum" sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, began their itinerary by visiting HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to see firsthand the world-class Korean shipbuilding technology and the progress in establishing smart shipyards.
On June 23, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that a group of 11 professors specializing in naval architecture and ocean engineering from the University of Michigan, MIT, Virginia Tech, Stevens Institute of Technology, San Diego State University, and the U.S. Naval Academy visited its headquarters in Ulsan. Over the course of their three-day visit, which will last until June 25, they will explore ways to enhance shipbuilding technology cooperation and nurture talent between the two countries.
During the first stop at the headquarters, the group held a meeting with CEO Lee Sangkyun and Special Ship Business Head Joo Wonho, then toured the commercial and special shipyards to assess HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' production capabilities. They also received a briefing on the "Future of Shipyard (FOS)" project, which aims to digitally transform shipbuilding, as well as on the integrated design-production platform, showing keen interest in Korea's smart shipyard strategies.
The delegation also visited the Autonomous Ship Demonstration Research Center in Dong-gu, Ulsan, where they boarded a test vessel, and listened to presentations on local educational infrastructure projects at Ulsan City Hall.
This forum is co-hosted by HD Hyundai and Seoul National University, with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. On June 24 and 25, in-depth discussions will take place at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and at Seoul National University in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. Topics will include strategies for Korea-U.S. cooperation in shipbuilding and ocean engineering education, joint research, and talent development, with a particular focus on international collaboration for the sustainable development of the shipbuilding industry.
