Jeonnam Police Secure Mobile Phones... Investigating Intervention in Construction Contracts
Checking Whether Councilor Used Position to Exert Influence
Police have launched an investigation following allegations that a member of the Gokseong County Council in South Jeolla Province operated a construction company under a borrowed name and intervened in securing government construction contracts. On June 20, the Second Anti-Corruption Crime Investigation Division of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency conducted a search and seizure of the home and office of Councilor A from the Gokseong County Council, securing related materials including mobile phones.
Councilor A is suspected of having transferred the construction company he previously operated to another person's name, but continued to effectively run the business and exert influence over the awarding of county-ordered construction projects even after entering public office. It is reported that only the ownership of the company was transferred to another individual after Councilor A assumed public office.
The police have received a related petition and are currently investigating whether Councilor A still effectively manages the company and whether he has been unfairly involved in securing construction contracts. A police official stated, "As this is an ongoing investigation, it is difficult to disclose specific details."
