Gijang County, Busan Strongly Opposes Poongsan Relocation Without Resident Input... Protests Plan to Move to Jangan-eup
Governor Jung Jongbok:
"Poongsan Relocation Is a Critical Issue Involving
the Local Environment, Safety, and Residents' Right to Livelihood"
Gijang County (Governor Jung Jongbok) has reaffirmed its strong opposition to the proposed relocation of defense company Poongsan to Jangan-eup, stating that "any unilateral decision without resident acceptance is absolutely unacceptable."
On June 19, Gijang County released an official statement, saying, "Busan City has received a letter of intent for investment regarding Poongsan's relocation to the Ori area of Jangan-eup and has sent a cooperation request," and criticized, "This decision amounts to a unilateral notification that thoroughly excludes Gijang County, which is a direct stakeholder, as well as local residents."
On June 18, Busan City officially announced that it had received Poongsan's letter of intent for investment, and it was reported that the name of the industrial complex was specified as 'Busan Ori No. 2 General Industrial Complex.'
In response, Gijang County has announced plans to begin a comprehensive process of gathering opinions together with Jangan-eup, relevant departments, resident organizations, and the county council. In particular, the county made it clear that "any decision that excludes resident opinions can never be accepted," expressing its intention to respond firmly.
Governor Jung Jongbok emphasized, "As I have stated on several occasions before, the relocation of Poongsan without resident acceptance is absolutely impossible," and added, "Busan City should remember the precedent in 2021, when the attempt to relocate to Ilgwang-eup was canceled due to local opposition, and must now move away from closed-door administration."
Governor Jung further stated, "The issue of Poongsan's relocation is not simply an administrative procedure, but a matter of critical importance involving the environment, safety, and the right to livelihood of local residents," and urged, "Busan City must engage in consultations with Gijang County, as a direct stakeholder, and actively communicate with the local community."
