Hampyeong-gun Creates Community Forest to Reduce Carbon Emissions and Mitigate Heat Waves
On June 19, Hampyeong-gun in South Jeolla Province announced that it has created a garden space within daily life to respond to climate change and improve the quality of life for residents.
The "2024 Community Forest Creation Project," established around the zelkova tree forest in Daedong-myeon, Hampyeong, was completed at the end of last month. The community forest project is a residential garden initiative aimed at responding to climate change, including reducing carbon emissions and mitigating heat waves. It is expected to have various effects, such as expanding carbon sinks and enhancing ecosystem health.
The county invested a total project cost of approximately 500 million won to create an outdoor park around the Daedong Hyanggyo zelkova tree forest and Wolsansa, which is Hampyeong-gun’s Local Cultural Heritage No. 1. The outdoor garden features landscaping trees such as camellias and blue ice, as well as herbaceous plants such as stonecrop and moss phlox. Decks and seating walls have also been installed, providing visitors with a comfortable space to relax in nature.
The county expects the garden, as a green living space, to offer residents and tourists opportunities for relaxation and ecological experiences, and to contribute to carbon reduction.
County Governor Lee Sangik stated, "I hope the outdoor garden will become a space where both residents and visitors can relax and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery," adding, "We will continue to do our best to improve the quality of life for our residents."
