Currently, approximately 55% of all apartment complexes in the city, based on the number of households, use RFID volume meters when disposing of food waste.
This year, on June 17, the city completed the first phase of the project by installing 20 units in four apartment complexes in the Jeongwang and Geomo-dong areas. In response to increasing demand, the city has secured additional funding and is currently installing 25 more units in two apartment complexes in Jeonggok-dong.
The RFID volume meter identifies the user and charges a fee based on the amount of food waste disposed. The city believes this system is highly effective because residents do not need to purchase special food waste bags and are encouraged to reduce waste themselves. According to the city's analysis, apartment complexes with the volume meters have achieved an average reduction rate of about 41%. The city also reported that, in addition to suppressing food waste generation, complaints about odors and pests have decreased.
