NYT: Iranian Official Willing to Accept Trump’s Proposal for Talks
Khamenei Warns of Resistance Against "Imposed Peace"
Contrasts with Earlier Remarks on Possible Dialogue
The New York Times (NYT) reported on June 18 (local time) that the Iranian side, currently engaged in conflict with Israel, has indicated its willingness to accept a proposal for talks from the United States.
Citing an Iranian Foreign Ministry official who requested anonymity, NYT reported that the Iranian government would accept President Donald Trump's offer for talks. On June 16, President Trump mentioned the possibility that either Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy to the Middle East, or Vice President JD Vance could initiate dialogue with Iran. According to the official, there is a growing sentiment within the Iranian Foreign Ministry to respond positively to this proposal.
Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had stated that Iran could return to diplomacy if Israel ceased its attacks. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) that day, Minister Araghchi reiterated, "With the exception of the illegal, genocidal, and occupying Israeli regime, we remain committed to diplomacy." He emphasized, "Iran acts purely in self-defense. Even when faced with baseless attacks against our people, Iran retaliates only against the Israeli regime and does not target those who assist or incite it."
