Dongkook Pharmaceutical, which owns the gum medication brand Insadol, has jointly conducted various campaigns to inform the public about the strong connection between diabetes and gum disease.
Notably, in 2020, to mark World Diabetes Day (November 14), the company ran the 'If You Have Diabetes, Take Care of Your Gums!' campaign, introducing lifestyle guidelines such as proper tooth brushing, regular dental checkups, and the use of oral hygiene products.
In addition, in 2023, Dongkook Pharmaceutical signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the 'Know Your and Your Family's Blood Sugar' campaign, and has continued collaborative activities to improve awareness of the importance of diabetes prevention and management.
Diabetes and gum disease interact with each other. People with gum disease are twice as likely to develop diabetes as healthy individuals, and those with diabetes have a threefold higher risk of gum disease. If a diabetes patient, for whom dietary control is important, experiences reduced chewing ability due to gum disease, this can lead to indigestion and nutritional imbalance. In particular, if a diabetes patient also has gum disease, the risk of developing diabetic complications increases more than fourfold, making proactive gum care essential.
