[New Release] On the Edge of 'Poverty Porn'... "Be Honest About Pain, But With Hope"
An elementary school in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. When a Korean private organization and a broadcasting team installed a well here, the children cheered. However, their joy at finally having safe water to drink was short-lived. One child asked the broadcasting team, "Will this well last? There used to be a well in the village, but it dried up quickly." The author, who has worked as a documentary producer for over 30 years, realized in that moment?through the anxiety lurking behind the children's cheers?that capturing phenomena on camera without understanding the context can sometimes become 'poverty porn,' sensationally consuming the despair of others. Since then, the author has traveled to 45 countries, holding to the belief that "the pain on the ground should be shown honestly, but the dignity and hope of humanity must also be captured," striving to document both phenomena and context equally. This book is a record of those 'memories.' Additionally, one of the pleasures of this book is the opportunity to encounter art and scenery from around the world.
