OpenAI Surpasses $10 Billion in Annual Revenue Driven by ChatGPT
Doubled in Just Six Months...
Aiming for $125 Billion by 2029
OpenAI has achieved an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $10 billion (approximately 13.548 trillion won) less than three years after launching its generative artificial intelligence (AI) product, ChatGPT, according to reports from CNBC and other U.S. media outlets on June 9 (local time).
This figure includes revenue from consumer products, ChatGPT enterprise offerings, and application programming interface (API) sales. According to OpenAI, the $10 billion ARR excludes licensing revenue from its largest investor, Microsoft (MS), as well as large one-time contracts.
ARR refers to the revenue a company expects to earn through subscription contracts over a 12-month period. It is a key metric used to indicate annual revenue size for subscription-based businesses.
OpenAI recorded an ARR of approximately $5.5 billion last year. This means its revenue has nearly doubled in just six months.
According to documents shared with investors, OpenAI is targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029.
Foreign media outlets have assessed that the increase in ARR suggests that the hype surrounding AI over the past two years is being justified, as both individuals and businesses are willing to spend money to use AI. CNBC explained that this new revenue metric provides context for OpenAI's massive corporate valuation.
