Russian Security Chief Shoigu Arrives in Pyongyang... Meets Kim Jong Un

Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, is visiting North Korea to meet with Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea.
On June 4, Russia's TASS news agency reported that Secretary Shoigu had traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea, on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is scheduled to hold talks with Chairman Kim Jong Un.
According to TASS, the Russian Security Council stated that during this meeting, the two sides would discuss the implementation of certain provisions of the "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty" (the North Korea-Russia Treaty) and work to permanently commemorate the North Korean soldiers who contributed to the liberation of Russia's Kursk region. TASS also added that current international issues, including the situation in the war in Ukraine, are expected to be discussed.

This visit by Secretary Shoigu to North Korea comes about two months after his last trip on March 21. At that time, Secretary Shoigu held talks with Chairman Kim Jong Un for more than two hours and conveyed a message from President Vladimir Putin. Secretary Shoigu is regarded as having served as President Putin's de facto special envoy, visiting North Korea at key moments in the recent North Korea-Russia relationship.
