Cautious Trading Ahead of Election Day... KOSPI Closes Slightly Higher
On June 2, one day before the June 3 presidential election, the KOSPI closed slightly higher.
On this day, the KOSPI finished at 2,698.97, up 1.3 points (0.05%) from the previous trading session.
On the 2nd, the status board in the dealing room of Hana Bank in Jung-gu, Seoul, displayed the KOSPI, the won/dollar exchange rate, and the KOSDAQ. View original imageWhile institutions recorded a net selling of 240.2 billion won, individual investors and foreigners posted net purchases of 98.7 billion won and 127.3 billion won respectively, helping to prevent the index from declining.
Among the top 10 KOSPI companies by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics (up 1.07%), SK Hynix (up 1.47%), Hanwha Aerospace (up 2.96%), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (up 5.55%), and Samsung Electronics Preferred (up 0.54%) rose. However, Samsung Biologics (down 0.10%), LG Energy Solution (down 0.52%), KB Financial Group (down 4.12%), and Hyundai Motor (down 0.70%) declined. Celltrion ended the session unchanged from the previous closing price.
Steel stocks showed weakness. This was due to the announcement last weekend by U.S. President Donald Trump that he would raise tariffs on steel from the previous 25% to 50%.
By sector, financial stocks, which had previously surged significantly due to presidential candidates' capital market pledges, all declined. The financial sector fell by 1.63%, marking the largest drop among all sectors. The securities sector also dropped by 0.99%.
The KOSDAQ index closed at 740.29, up 5.94 points (0.81%) from the previous session's 734.35.
Although individual investors recorded a net selling of 120.2 billion won, foreigners and institutions posted net purchases of 111.0 billion won and 14.4 billion won respectively, resulting in net buying dominance.
Among the top KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, performance was strong. Alteogen (up 6.06%), PharmaResearch (up 4.99%), and Rainbow Stick (up 1.70%) rose. On the other hand, Ecopro BM (down 0.78%), Ecopro (down 1.64%), HLB (down 3.11%), and Peptron (down 1.08%) declined.
