Jaesung Lee of Gwangju City Hall Achieves Gold Medal at Asian Athletics Championships
Kang Daseul Also Sets New Korean Record in 400m Relay
Gwangju City announced on June 1 that Jaesung Lee and Daseul Kang, members of the Gwangju City Hall athletics team, participated in the '2025 Asian Athletics Championships' and each set new Korean national records in the men's and women's 400m relay events.
Jaesung Lee, along with Minjun Seo, Joeljin Namadi, and Junhyeok Lee, won the gold medal in the men's 400m relay final held in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, recording a time of 38.49 seconds. This achievement is significant as it not only sets a new Korean record, but also marks the first time a Korean men's 400m relay team has ever won a gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships.
Until now, Korea had won bronze medals in this event a total of four times, in 1981, 1983, 1985, and 2023, but this is the first time the country has claimed the gold medal.
Daseul Kang, together with Eunbin Lee, Soeun Kim, and Daeun Kim, set a new Korean national record for the first time in 11 years with a time of 44.45 seconds in the women's 400m relay final.
Mayor Kang Gijung stated, "The brilliant achievements of Jaesung Lee and Daseul Kang of the Gwangju City Hall athletics team are a valuable accomplishment that has written a new chapter in the history of Korean athletics, not just for Gwangju but for the entire nation. The passion and determination they demonstrated at this competition will serve as a great inspiration for the future sports talents of Gwangju."
Meanwhile, Gwangju City announced that, as the international achievements of the athletics team are greatly enhancing the reputation of Gwangju sports, the city will continue to identify outstanding athletes and provide systematic support in the future.
