Professor Song Geumjong of Soonchunhyang University Hospital Wins Best Presentation Award at Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Conference
Presentation on the Relationship Between Postoperative Gastric Morphology, Weight Loss, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital announced on May 29 that Professor Song Geumjong of the Department of Gastroenterology received the Best Presentation Award at the '2025 Asia-Pacific Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Society (APMBSS) and Korean Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (KSMBS) International Conference,' held at the Mayfield Hotel in Seoul from May 23 to 24.
Professor Song presented a study titled "A 3D CT-Based Study on the Relationship Between Gastric Morphology, Weight Loss, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease After Sleeve Gastrectomy."
This research, conducted in collaboration with Professor Kim Sanghyun's team at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital, analyzed the gastric morphology of sleeve gastrectomy patients for one year after surgery using three-dimensional computed tomography. The study examined the effects on weight loss and the association with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The study found that the postoperative shape of the stomach significantly affects the weight loss rate. In addition, it was reported that a larger remnant gastric volume tends to lower the risk of developing gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Professor Song Geumjong stated, "This study is significant in that analyzing gastric morphology using 3D CT is useful for predicting the prognosis of metabolic and bariatric surgery," adding, "Based on these results, we plan to conduct follow-up research to further demonstrate its utility."
