Rice Straw Stake Setting is a folk tradition in which, on Jeongwol Daeboreum (the first full moon of the lunar year), pouches of five grains are hung on a tall pole and erected in a well or yard to pray for a bountiful harvest for the year.
This program has been organized to introduce the valuable cultural heritage of Chungnam to students in Seosan and Taean, where the tradition of Rice Straw Stake Setting remains well preserved, and to provide them with an opportunity to experience local folk customs.
The experience education will be held a total of six times for students in grades 4 to 6 at Seosan Buseong Elementary School, Taean Hwadong Elementary School, and Taean Elementary School.
During the course, students will first watch a promotional video about Rice Straw Stake Setting, then twist rice straw into ropes and use bamboo and grains to create a model of the rice straw stake.
Chungnam Province and the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture were selected for the National Heritage Administration's public contest for discovering and fostering future intangible heritage, aimed at promoting the transmission of the Rice Straw Stake Setting tradition. Since 2023, they have been carrying out the "Chungnam Rice Straw Stake Setting Value Discovery and Transmission Foundation Project."
Kim Nakjung, Director of the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture, stated, "The response to last year's pilot experience education was very positive, so we have expanded the program this year. The institute will continue to play a greater role in helping students, the next generation, to increase their interest in our region's cultural heritage and traditional culture."
