Daejeon Election Commission Reports 14 Cases of Presidential Election Poster and Banner Damage to Police
Request for Strengthened Education and Guidance to Daejeon Office of Education
With just over ten days remaining until the 21st presidential election, there have been 14 reported cases of damage to candidate election posters and banners in Daejeon.
According to the Daejeon Election Commission on May 22, as of the previous day, 14 cases of damage to election posters and related materials had been reported, and investigation materials were forwarded to the relevant police stations.
In particular, as incidents involving youths damaging election posters as a prank have occurred, the commission requested the Daejeon Office of Education to strengthen education and guidance at all schools to prevent the destruction of election posters and banners.
Article 240, Paragraph 1 of the Public Official Election Act stipulates that anyone who, without just cause, interferes with the production, posting, attachment, or installation of posters, banners, or other promotional facilities under this law, or damages or removes them, shall be subject to imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 4 million won.
An official from the Daejeon Election Commission stated, "Damaging or removing campaign facilities such as election posters and banners is a serious crime that disrupts fair elections," adding, "We will respond strictly to any violations."
