Pohang Yeongildae Beach to Build "Clock Tower of Light"... New Landmark Anticipated
Transformation of the Aging Clock Tower into a New Landmark Structure
Completion Targeted Before Beach Opening
Sun-Sea and Light-Wave Imagery, Night Scenery Created with LED Panel Lighting
Pohang City is pushing forward with a project to construct the symbolic structure known as the "Clock Tower of Light" and to create a plaza for gatherings in the area of Yeongildae Beach.
Yeongildae Beach, located in the Buk-gu district of Pohang, is one of the city's most prominent beaches and is beloved by many tourists for its beautiful coastline and scenic blue sea.
However, as concerns were raised that the aging clock tower was negatively affecting the image of the beach, Pohang City began to formalize plans for a new structure, starting with a community briefing session in August last year.
This project, with a total budget of 1.7 billion won, is expected to significantly enhance the recognition of Yeongildae Beach and greatly contribute to attracting more tourists.
The design of the "Clock Tower of Light" features imagery of the sun rising over the horizon, the sea, light, and waves. At night, LED panel lighting will create a beautiful night view.
A plaza will be created around the structure, providing a space where citizens and tourists can freely gather and relax. It is anticipated that this area will become a new landmark for Yeongildae Beach, serving as a place for promises and meetings.
In particular, the "Clock Tower of Light" has been engineered to maintain structural stability even in the harsh coastal environment, including sea winds, salt, and temperature fluctuations. Corrosion-resistant materials have been used to enhance its durability.
Additionally, a system will be established so that the LED panels can display various information, such as the current time and weather, as well as news about Pohang City's festivals and events.
Furthermore, a "couple proposal event function" will be introduced, aiming to make Yeongildae Beach a special place where couples can create lasting memories.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Once this symbolic structure is built, Yeongildae Beach will become an even more attractive tourist destination, offering special memories and inspiration to visitors to Pohang. We will continue to expand various tourism infrastructures, including Yeongildae Beach, to establish Pohang as Korea's leading marine tourism city."
Pohang City is expediting construction with the goal of completing the "Clock Tower of Light" structure before the opening of the beach season.
