View original imageThe Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced on the 21st that it participated in the '2025 Gwangju Science Invention Festival' held over two days on the 17th and 18th at the National Gwangju Science Museum, where it operated an 'Eco-friendly Energy Experience' booth.
This event was co-hosted by Gwangju City and the National Gwangju Science Museum and organized by the Gwangju Science Culture Association. A total of 63 programs were operated across eight zones.
The GIST Next Generation Energy Research Institute participated in the 'Basic Science Zone', presenting a variety of hands-on programs themed around solar energy, which attracted participation from over 300 local residents.
Participants shared their thoughts on energy by reciting six-line poems on the themes of 'eco-friendly energy' and 'renewable energy'. They also assembled and operated various solar-powered kits, including solar boats, cars, windmills, dog robots, and airplanes, experiencing firsthand the principles of renewable energy technology and its practical applications in daily life.
The Next Generation Energy Research Institute is dedicated to research and practical application of next-generation energy technologies such as solar energy, batteries, hydrogen, and power systems, and is actively engaged in science education outreach activities in collaboration with the local community.
A GIST representative stated, "The operation of this booth gained additional significance as it was linked to the RISE (Regional Innovation-led University Support System) Urban Campus Living Lab project promoted by Gwangju Metropolitan City," and added, "Going forward, it will be expanded into sustainable education and service-oriented programs aimed at improving the energy literacy of local residents."
Launched in 2009 as the 'Solar Energy Research Institute', the Next Generation Energy Research Institute has led research in key energy fields such as organic solar cells, energy storage devices, and catalyst technology. In addition, it operates joint research centers with Nobel laureates in chemistry, Professor Alan J. Heeger and Professor Gerhard Ertl, and is strengthening its global research capabilities by establishing collaborative frameworks with leading universities worldwide, including Imperial College London and UC Santa Barbara.
