View original imageThe breakwater of Dodok Village in Myodo-dong, Yeosu City, has been reborn as a mural, attracting attention. Dodok Village is the site where Admiral Chen Lin, who led the Ming navy during the Japanese Invasion of Korea, joined forces with the Joseon navy to fight against the Japanese army.
This breakwater, which served as the backdrop for a historically significant naval battle, has now been transformed into a mural. The village's name, "Dodok," also originates from Chen Lin's official title.
Myodo-dong (headed by Lee Sangro) planned the mural project last month in order to preserve the origins and historical value of Dodok Village and to create tourism synergy by connecting with the nearby Lighting Allied Naval Forces Theme Park. Village residents also contributed by assisting with basic painting and other tasks.
The mural, which stretches for about 150 meters, vividly depicts Admiral Yi Sunshin and Admiral Chen Lin joining forces to fight against the Japanese army. The walls are filled with scenes of Geobukseon (turtle ships), Panokseon, and the allied resistance of the Joseon and Ming navies.
Myodo-dong expects that this mural will not only provide a new attraction, but also foster a sense of pride in the region among village residents.
Lee Sangro, head of the district, said, "We wanted to promote and preserve the history and value of Dodok Village, which is imbued with the legacy of Admiral Yi Sunshin and Admiral Chen Lin," adding, "Through this mural project, we hope to set an example of open administration in cooperation with local residents."
