The Hydrogen Future Begins in Uljin... Leading the Hydrogen Economy with a Large-Scale Production Base
Presenting the Vision of a "Clean Hydrogen Production Hub"
at the Spring Conference of the Korean Hydrogen and New Energy Society
Uljin County participated in the "2025 Spring Conference of the Korean Hydrogen and New Energy Society," held at Daegu EXCO on May 15, and presented Uljin's vision and strategy to lead South Korea's transition to a hydrogen economy.
The Spring Conference of the Korean Hydrogen and New Energy Society, held from May 14 to 16, 2025, was the largest hydrogen energy academic event in the country, with the theme "The Role of Hydrogen Energy in Securing Carbon Neutral Sustainability." Over 500 of the latest research results and policy case studies were shared during the event.
In a special session on "The Status and Policy Direction of the Hydrogen Industry in North Gyeongsang Province," Noh Yongseong, head of the Uljin Hydrogen National Industrial Promotion Team, introduced the strategic direction and mid- to long-term plans for establishing a large-scale hydrogen production base using nuclear power.
The county plans to further advance its clean hydrogen production system by connecting the "Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex," currently under development, with next-generation reactor-based high-temperature electrolysis systems such as ultra-high-temperature gas reactors, in addition to the existing low-temperature electrolysis clean hydrogen production method that utilizes carbon-free electricity from nuclear power plants.
In addition, the county presented step-by-step strategies for building a full-cycle hydrogen ecosystem, including securing a foundation for large-scale clean hydrogen production, establishing hydrogen storage and transportation infrastructure, creating an industrial cluster, conducting R&D demonstration and workforce training, and attracting companies and securing demand sources.
The county emphasized the strategic value of "nuclear-based clean hydrogen production" as a realistic alternative that can simultaneously address the national challenges of resolving transmission constraints in the domestic power grid and achieving carbon neutrality. The need for policy support, such as expanding government institutional support, creating a private sector cooperation ecosystem, and designating regulatory special cases, was also mentioned.
