The appointment ceremony, held at the Government Seoul Office Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, was attended by Myeong Changhwan, Vice Governor of Jeollanam-do, Ko Gidong, Acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Shin Woochul, Mayor of Wando-gun, the newly appointed ambassadors, and about 30 other participants.
The ambassadors will actively promote the 6th Island Day in advance and, during the event, will visit the site to interact with visitors and take the lead in publicizing the value and appeal of islands.
This year’s Island Day will be held in Wando, known as the “Healing Island,” from August 7 to August 10 under the theme “Take a Slow Look Around, Island.” It is a meaningful event, as it is the second time since the first Island Day in 2019 (held in Mokpo and Sinan, Jeollanam-do) that Jeollanam-do is hosting the event.
During the event, a variety of programs will be offered for all generations, including an experiential exhibition hall themed around healing, an island perimeter walking event, a children’s island healing academy, an academic conference on island development, and events with the participation of island residents.
Vice Governor Myeong Changhwan stated, “Islands are spaces that hold the stories of our lives and are precious assets that open the door to a sustainable future. Through this Island Day, I hope more people will experience the beauty and value of islands firsthand and find true rest and comfort on the islands of Jeollanam-do.”
“Island Day” (August 8) was designated as a national commemorative day in 2018 through the revision of the Island Development Promotion Act to widely promote the importance and value of islands. Each year, commemorative events are held, centered on local governments where islands are located.
