HMM Ranked No. 1 Global Shipping Company in ESG Assessment
Sustainalytics Ranks HMM as Top Global Shipping Company for ESG
Company Receives Highest Marks for Environmental and Governance Efforts
HMM announced on May 19 that it has been ranked as the number one global shipping company for the second consecutive time by Sustainalytics, a global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) rating agency.
'Sustainalytics' is a subsidiary of the U.S. investment firm Morningstar and a specialized ESG rating agency. The ESG risk assessments by Sustainalytics are used as reference materials in decision-making by institutional investors worldwide.
Sustainalytics evaluates a total of seven categories: corporate governance, greenhouse gas emissions, occupational health and safety, human capital, environmental pollution, ethical management, and stakeholder management. Companies are graded into five levels along with their scores, and a lower score indicates a lower ESG risk for the company.
In the previous assessment in 2023, HMM received a 'Low Risk' grade and a score of 15.4, ranking first among global shipping companies. In this latest assessment, conducted after 20 months, HMM maintained its top position with the same grade and an improved score of 13.6.
Notably, in this year's assessment, HMM received high marks in the environmental (greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution) and corporate governance categories, particularly for strengthening the establishment and management of air pollutant reduction targets, analyzing and disclosing climate-related financial impacts, and increasing the proportion of outside directors.
An HMM official stated, "We will continue to pursue our mid- to long-term strategy for 2030 and strengthen ESG management to become a top-tier global shipping company."
