Fox News Interview
Asked if he would like to talk with him: "Of course"
Controversy over posting a doctored photo in papal garments
U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Leo XIV, the first pope to be elected from the United States, saying, "He was truly an unexpected choice."
In an interview with Fox News aired on the 14th (local time), President Trump was asked, "Leo XIV seems to have different views on immigration, but aside from that, would you like to talk with him?" He replied, "Of course," and made these remarks.
President Trump also criticized media outlets such as CNN for reporting that the election of the first American pope was 'unrelated to Trump.'
Previously, before being elected as pope, Leo XIV, whose birth name is Robert Prevost, had posted several messages on his X (formerly Twitter) account criticizing the Trump administration's immigration policies, according to reports by the New York Times (NYT) and others.
When Leo XIV was elected as the new pope on the 8th, President Trump said, "It is a great honor for the country," and added, "I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV."
