At the site that day, safety and health managers and on-site workers jointly checked key items, including identifying the locations of confined spaces, identifying risk factors for poisoning and suffocation, reviewing work procedures and checkpoints, and verifying the confined space work program and permits.
In particular, the importance of ventilation before and during work, measuring oxygen and hazardous gas concentrations, and the correct use of equipment to prevent suffocation accidents (such as multi-gas detectors, ventilators, and supplied-air masks) was emphasized.
Ahn Wonhwan, head of the branch, stated, "During the summer, painting work in confined spaces at construction sites poses a high risk of toxic gas poisoning and suffocation, so special caution is required." He added, "The Gyeongnam East Branch operates the 'Jilsik STOP Call' service to prevent suffocation accidents, so we strongly encourage all workplaces with scheduled related work to actively utilize this service."
The 'Jilsik STOP Call' service is a system in which experts from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency visit sites where inspection, painting, or cleaning work is scheduled in confined spaces and provide essential safety guidelines and technical guidance free of charge.
