Gwangjin District (District Mayor Kim Kyungho) has completed a pedestrian environment improvement project for a 270-meter section of Ttukseom-ro 46-gil (Jayang-dong) this month.
The area around Ttukseom-ro 46-gil is a densely populated residential neighborhood adjacent to an elementary school. Although there was heavy vehicle traffic, the lack of pedestrian space posed a high risk of accidents.
In response, the district began gathering residents' opinions in 2023 and launched a full-scale effort to improve the pedestrian environment, aiming to protect pedestrians and create a safe route to school.
First, the existing 7-meter-wide roadway was reduced to 3 meters, and new 2-meter-wide sidewalks were installed on both sides. Through this "road diet," the road structure was transformed from being vehicle-centered to pedestrian-centered.
Additionally, to ensure drivers clearly recognize the children's protection zone, the district marked the start and end points and installed various traffic safety facilities such as "yellow crosswalks" and "LED road studs" to enhance visibility.
Furthermore, the district focused on improving the overall road environment and reducing the risk of traffic accidents by implementing anti-slip pavement improvements, repainting speed limit markings, and installing new speed bumps.
