To provide transportation convenience that matches the continuously growing demand for rail travel, the city secured approval from the city council and signed a business agreement with Korea Railroad Corporation for the facility improvement and expansion project at Mulgeum Station.
The current Mulgeum Station building, completed in 2003, has become outdated and cramped after more than 20 years. In particular, the steady increase in passengers since the start of KTX service has caused greater inconvenience for citizens. To address this, the station will be expanded by 663 square meters, with additional waiting rooms and restrooms to be installed, and the front of the building will be remodeled to improve the surrounding landscape.
According to the agreement for the Mulgeum Station facility improvement and expansion project, the scope includes the station expansion (including other auxiliary facilities) and all related civil engineering, electrical, communication, and signaling works. The project budget is set at 12 billion won, with Yangsan City covering 40% and Korea Railroad Corporation covering 60%. After Korea Railroad Corporation completes the construction, the facilities will be transferred to Korea Railroad Corporation free of charge.
With the signing of this business agreement, Korea Railroad Corporation plans to proceed with the project, starting with an architectural design competition for the station building, followed by detailed design services and other related steps.
Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "Mulgeum Station serves as the gateway to Yangsan City. Once the facilities are improved and expanded, it will not only enhance transportation convenience for Yangsan citizens but also become a key hub attracting nationwide tourists for events such as the Mulgeum Cherry Blossom Festival and the Hwangsan Park Festival."
