Memorial Ceremony, Photo Exhibition, and Changgeuk to Be Held on May 14
Jangseong County in South Jeolla Province announced on May 12 that it had selected Kim Dongsu, a martyr who defended the Jeonnam Provincial Government Office during the May 18 Democratic Movement, as the 'Jangseong Historical Figure' of May.

View original imageKim Dongsu was born in 1958 in Supsil Village, Jangsan-ri, Seosam-myeon, Jangseong County. He entered the Department of Electronic Engineering at Chosun University and participated in the democratization movement while being active in the University Buddhist Association. In May 1980, as a member of the civilian militia, he remained at the Jeonnam Provincial Government Office until the end, and on May 27, he lost his life at the age of 23 to the bullets of the martial law troops.
Kim Dongsu's birthplace is currently preserved in Supsil Village, and memorial monuments have been erected at Jangseong Seosam Elementary School and Chosun University.
To honor Kim Dongsu's spirit, the county will hold the 45th anniversary ceremony of the May 18 Democratic Movement at the Jangseong Culture and Arts Center on May 14. Starting the next day, a related photo exhibition will be held at Munhyang High School and on the first floor of the county office. In addition, on May 24, a memorial cultural festival will take place in front of the Imgok Village Hall in his hometown of Jangsan-ri.
On November 11, the original changgeuk (Korean traditional opera) "You Returned Here After a Long Journey," which tells the story of Kim Dongsu's life, will be performed at the Grand Theater of the Jangseong Culture and Arts Center.
