The bio industry is generally classified into red bio (pharmaceuticals), white bio (energy materials), and green bio (agricultural life sciences). Among these, the city plans to focus on nurturing the "green bio industry," which emphasizes eco-friendliness and sustainability. This is a strategy that maximizes Suncheon's strengths as the ecological capital of Korea and as an integrated urban-rural city.
The city has analyzed advanced domestic and international cases and identified the following as key conditions for successful industry development: utilization of local resources, establishment of a network system among companies, and a foundation for R&D capabilities and talent cultivation.
Based on these conditions, the city plans to create a unique industry development model called "E-Bio Suncheon," positioning the green bio industry as a new engine for sustainable future growth.
"E-Bio Suncheon" is an industry development model that transforms Suncheon's ecological assets into economic value. It will be implemented through a two-track strategy that includes fostering local companies and attracting anchor enterprises. In particular, the city will build an industrial foundation that reflects corporate demand from the outset and aims to link Suncheon Bay's clean image to product branding.
Currently, Suncheon City is focusing on developing the bio industry using its secured budget, initially designating food, cosmetics, and pet food as strategic product groups to verify industrialization potential and attract related companies, with an open recruitment planned for the second half of the year. In addition, the city plans to establish a green bio industry base in the Seungju-eup area by 2027 as an advanced outpost for intensively nurturing these strategic products.
This project will be promoted in connection with the Knowledge Industry Center and Jeonnam-type Balanced Development 300, aiming not only to build production facilities but also to create an industrial ecosystem where companies and residents collaborate.
On May 9, Mayor Noh Gwankyu emphasized, "Suncheon possesses ecological and garden brand assets accumulated through Suncheon Bay and the Garden Expo, and when combined, this 'clean brand' will provide a differentiated competitive edge over other regions. We will systematically foster E-Bio Suncheon so that it can become a new engine for sustainable future growth."
Meanwhile, Suncheon City is working toward being designated as a "Green Bio Industry Development Zone" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Through this, the city plans to accelerate industrial clustering and focus on fostering green bio as a new growth engine for the eastern region of Jeonnam.
