Gochang County's Agricultural By-Product Safe Disposal Support Project Receives Positive Response
Operation of the Mobile Shredding Support Team
The 'Agricultural By-Product Safe Disposal Support Project' in Gochang County, North Jeolla Province, is receiving a positive response from local farmers.
According to the county on May 9, since early February, the county has been operating the 'Mobile Agricultural By-Product Shredding Support Team' across 14 towns and townships within its jurisdiction. As of May, shredding operations have been conducted on 66 hectares (94 farms).
The Shredding Support Team consists of six shredding personnel and two shredding machines, visiting sites directly to assist with shredding agricultural by-products. In particular, priority is given to areas adjacent to forests (within 100 meters), as well as farms operated by elderly farmers, women, and vulnerable groups.
Instead of burning agricultural by-products such as pepper stems, sesame stems, and twigs in paddy fields and dry fields, the team visits farms that apply for the service and uses shredders to crush the materials free of charge.
This project helps establish a culture of natural circulation and prevents spring wildfires. It also reduces the generation of fine dust. In particular, the shredding operations greatly contribute to alleviating labor shortages on farms and reducing agricultural management costs.
The county owns a total of 23 shredders at four regional agricultural machinery rental centers, and for village-level joint shredding operations, free rental and delivery services are provided.
Additionally, the project is being intensively promoted in the first half of the year in connection with the seasonal fine dust management system and wildfire prevention period. For additional farms wishing to participate, support is available at any time through the Agricultural Technology Center and local town or township offices.
Hyeon Haengyeol, head of the Gochang County Agricultural Technology Center, said, "We will do our best to reduce fine dust in the agricultural sector and create a resource-circulating and clean agricultural environment through safe and efficient disposal of agricultural by-products," adding, "We will further enhance the effectiveness of the project through continuous promotion and support."
