Promoting Underground Utility Project for School Routes near Siheung-daero including Geumcheon High School
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yoo Seonghun) announced plans to carry out an underground utility project near Siheung-daero, where school routes for Geumcheon High School, Jeontong Yesul Middle and High School, Siheung Middle School, and Baeksan Elementary School are located.
The district was selected for a government-supported underground utility project organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and will implement the project on both sides of Siheung-daero from 93 to 143, covering a total distance of 1.21 km (excluding the 150-meter section at Waterfall Park).
This section is an area with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic, including many students, as several schools are clustered nearby. However, utility poles and overhead wires have made passage inconvenient and increased the risk of safety accidents.
The district will invest a total project budget of 12.8 billion KRW, including 1.8 billion KRW in national funds secured through the 2025 project selection, 1.4 billion KRW in city funds, 5.1 billion KRW in district funds, and 4.5 billion KRW from Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies. The project will involve installing above-ground equipment such as transformers and switchgear within the project section, and after constructing underground conduits and laying cables, the numerous overhead wires and utility poles will be removed.
In the first half of this year, the district signed business agreements with Korea Electric Power Corporation and seven telecommunications companies and held a project briefing. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027.
Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, "The underground utility project is an investment in the safety of students and residents, as well as in a pleasant urban environment," adding, "We will continue to prioritize the happiness and safety of our residents and pursue policies that foster empathy and engagement with the community."

Once the project for the Jeonghun complex section in Doksan-dong is finished by May, the 1 km stretch in Doksan-dong (from Siheung 1-dong Post Office to Doksan 4-dong Intersection) will be transformed into a pleasant street free of overhead wires and utility poles.
