West Sea Regional Coast Guard Conducts Intensive Safety Inspections for Passenger and Cargo Ships
174 Risk Factors Detected Last Year...
Preemptive Measures Taken
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard (Commissioner Lee Myungjun) announced on April 24 that, as the number of people engaging in maritime activities continues to steadily increase during the spring excursion season, it is conducting intensive safety inspections of passenger and cargo ships operating on the sea surface.
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard is carrying out safety inspections for two months, from April 14 to June 13, in order to identify risk factors in advance for ships and piers where safety accidents are a concern.

The teams are inspecting ships over 20 years old, ships with a passenger capacity of 200 or more, cargo ferries capable of loading vehicles, and piers where passenger and cargo ships are moored or anchored. The inspection targets within the jurisdiction include 29 passenger and cargo ships and 32 piers.
Meanwhile, last year, the West Sea Regional Coast Guard conducted comprehensive inspections of a total of 62 high-risk passenger and cargo ships and piers, identified 174 risk factors, and took corrective measures, taking the lead in enhancing maritime safety for the public.
A representative from the West Sea Regional Coast Guard stated, "We are diagnosing not only the safety of facilities and equipment according to the safety inspection checklist, but also identifying areas for improvement in laws, regulations, and actual conditions." The representative added, "We plan to disclose the inspection results and establish a continuous and systematic safety management system by creating a database of the inspected facilities."
