Wando County Selected for 'Island Forest Landscape Restoration Project' for Two Consecutive Years
Forest Restoration in Sinji-myeon with 1.3 Billion KRW Investment
Wando County, Jeonnam announced on the 9th that it has once again been selected this year for the 'Island Forest Landscape Restoration Project' organized by the Korea Forest Service, following last year's selection.
Accordingly, the county will invest a total of 1.3 billion KRW in the Sinji-ri District of Sinji-myeon to begin full-scale forest restoration, including planting warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees. The 'Island Forest Landscape Restoration Project' aims to restore the forest ecosystem of island coastal areas damaged by natural disasters, human activities, or climate change to their original state and to enhance biodiversity. The Korea Forest Service has been promoting this project since 2022.

To improve the growth environment in this area, Wando County will first carry out soil improvement work and then plant approximately 13,000 trees of nine species of warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees, including local species such as Hwangchil, Dongbaek, and Wandohoranggasi-namu.
Even after the planting is completed, Wando County plans to systematically evaluate the changes before and after restoration and maximize the restoration effect by conducting continuous monitoring and maintenance for the next 10 years, as well as addressing any necessary improvements.
A county official stated, "Achieving carbon neutrality is essential to respond to the climate crisis, and securing carbon sinks is important for this. We will continue to do our best to restore island forests in the future."
Meanwhile, the Korea Forest Service plans to introduce the Sinji Sinji-ri District as a representative model of the Island Forest Landscape Restoration Project and promote the project's achievements externally at the 6th Island Day commemorative event, which will be held in Wando from August 8 to 11.
