Composed of 13 Members Including Public Officials and Police Officers
Inspection of Election Neutrality among Public Officials to be Conducted
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has opened the 'Fair Election Support Situation Room' in preparation for the presidential election to be held on June 3.
On the 9th, the Ministry announced that it has established a situation room at the Central Building of the Government Sejong Complex, staffed by 13 members including affiliated public officials, local government officials, and police officers. The situation room will support statutory election tasks such as the preparation of voter lists by local governments to ensure stable election management, and will be responsible for cooperation with related organizations such as the National Election Commission and the National Police Agency.
From its launch, the situation room plans to quickly grasp major election trends and the status of incidents and accidents, and respond promptly in cooperation with related organizations. According to the election schedule, it will support election management tasks of local governments and election commissions, as well as on-site inspections and the provision of facilities, personnel, and equipment.
Additionally, the Ministry will form joint inspection teams with city and provincial governments to ensure that local government officials comply with the obligation of election neutrality, and plans to gradually strengthen inspection activities according to the election schedule. It will focus on monitoring violations of the Public Official Election Act such as support or defamation of specific parties or candidates via SNS, arranging various gatherings, and leaking internal documents.
The Ministry will also establish and operate an 'Anonymous Reporting Channel for Public Election Corruption' on its website. If reports confirm involvement of local government officials in election interference, strict measures will be taken.
