Jeonnam Province Focuses on Eco-Friendly Car Battery Business
Focusing on the Net Zero City Demonstration Project
Storing Battery Power for Resource Utilization
Investing 2.95 Billion KRW by Next Year
Jeollanam-do is putting its utmost effort into the "Eco-friendly Vehicle-based Net Zero City Demonstration Project," which aims to build an energy circulation system by storing electricity in batteries of eco-friendly vehicles such as electric cars and utilizing it as a resource when needed.
Jeollanam-do produces the largest amount of renewable energy in the country, mainly from solar and wind power, ranking first nationwide in terms of production volume. However, challenges in power management, such as fluctuations in electricity production due to natural conditions and issues of oversupply or shortage, have been consistently pointed out.
To address this, Jeollanam-do has been promoting the Eco-friendly Vehicle-based Net Zero City Demonstration Project since April last year, utilizing electricity generated from renewable energy and using electric vehicles not just as a means of transportation but as mobile energy storage systems (ESS).
This project was selected as a 2024 Ministry of Science and ICT public offering project, and a total budget of 2.95 billion KRW (1.35 billion KRW each from the national and local governments, and 250 million KRW from the private sector) will be invested over three years until 2026.
The Net Zero City Demonstration Project aims to establish an efficient energy circulation system by storing electricity in electric vehicle batteries and utilizing it as an energy resource that can be supplied back to buildings or facilities when needed.
The core of the project is to supply electricity stored in electric vehicle batteries to facilities using "V2G (Vehicle to Grid)" technology, which enables bidirectional energy transfer between electric vehicles and the power grid.
Through this, Jeollanam-do aims to verify the effect of reducing electricity costs and operational economic feasibility, and to derive practical revenue models.
Seo Sooncheol, Director of Corporate City Affairs at Jeollanam-do, said, "To prepare for the commercialization of future electric vehicles, we are building infrastructure to connect chargers and power grids, and advancing key technologies such as secure communication, bidirectional charging, and payment systems," adding, "Based on this, we will expand into electric vehicle-based energy demand management services, power trading models, and digital platform businesses."
