Chairman Ahn Chang-ho of the National Human Rights Commission expressed his welcome for the unanimous adoption of the North Korea human rights resolution at the 58th United Nations Human Rights Council.
In a statement released on the 7th, Chairman Ahn explained, "This resolution includes calls for the immediate release of North Korean defectors who have been forcibly deported or repatriated, as well as the arbitrary detention of nationals of UN member states, and demands an end to human rights violations such as forced labor and harsh punishments of children, which may constitute crimes against humanity." He added, "Reflecting the deployment situation in the Russia-Ukraine war, it also requests the North Korean authorities to prohibit excessive use of force that causes international security instability."

He further stated, "We express deep concern over the long-standing, systematic, widespread, and serious human rights violations within North Korea," and said, "We hope that the issues urged in this resolution will improve through a proactive change in attitude by the North Korean authorities and constructive cooperation with the international community."
