Korea Student Aid Foundation: 1.47 Million University Students Apply for First Semester National Scholarship, Up 60,000 from Last Year
The Korea Student Aid Foundation (Chairman Bae Byungil) and the Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Juhyo) announced on the 3rd that 1.47 million university students have completed applications for the National Scholarship for the first semester of the 2025 academic year.
This represents an increase of about 60,000 applicants compared to the previous year (1.41 million), achieving an exceptional application rate despite the ongoing trend of declining applicants due to a decrease in the school-age population.
This year, for the first time, the eligibility for National Scholarship Type I and the Multi-Child National Scholarship has been expanded from households in income level 8 or below to income level 9 or below. As a result, approximately 75% of all university students, including those from middle-class households, are expected to receive support from the National Scholarship.
For the newly eligible income level 9, recipients can receive 1 million KRW per year for National Scholarship Type I. In the case of the Multi-Child Scholarship, the first and second children can receive 1.35 million KRW per year, and the third child or more can receive 2 million KRW per year.
Bae Byungil, Chairman of the Korea Student Aid Foundation, stated, "With the expansion of support to income level 9 for the National Scholarship, more university students will be able to receive substantial tuition assistance. In particular, it is expected to greatly help alleviate the educational expenses burden on middle-class households." He added, "Going forward, the Korea Student Aid Foundation will continue to expand support to enhance equity in educational opportunities and enable more students to focus on their studies."
Application results can be checked on the Korea Student Aid Foundation website starting from the first week of April. For more detailed consultations, students can receive one-on-one customized counseling via phone or by visiting the Korea Student Aid Foundation's regional centers and Youth Startup Centers.
