Fostering Startups and Promoting Industry-Academia Projects Through Institutional Cooperation
Lim Byeongtaek, Mayor: "We Will Expand Support to Develop a Bio Hub"
The strategy of Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, which aims to foster the advanced bioindustry, has gained momentum. Seoul National University was selected in the bio sector of the 'Advanced Industry Specialized Graduate School Support Project' led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
This project is designed to cultivate and utilize master's and doctoral-level talents who will lead the nation's advanced strategic industries. Selected universities receive government funding of 3 billion KRW annually for five years, totaling 15 billion KRW, to support the establishment of educational environments, development and operation of curricula, and employment support.
The city plans to accelerate the development of the bioindustry and talent cultivation, which it is focusing on, through cooperation with Seoul National University following this selection.
Previously, Siheung City laid the foundation for a related industrial hub by attracting a national advanced bio-specialized complex in June last year. The bio-specialized complex is a region designated by the government to secure bio super-gap technologies and establish bio hubs.
Siheung City, in cooperation with Gyeonggi Province and Incheon City, plans to create a mega bio cluster centered on Seoul National University Siheung Campus and Siheung Baegot Seoul National University Hospital. To this end, Chong Kun Dang was selected as the preferred negotiator to move into the Research 3-1 site in the Baegot district of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone, and a negotiation team has been formed to finalize the business plan.
Through this selection, Seoul National University plans to operate an advanced industry bio-specialized graduate school, foster bio startups in collaboration with city research institutes and major companies, and promote advanced bio-related industry-academia projects.
Assemblyman Jo Jeong-sik said, "Through this selection, a foundation has been established for local governments and universities to cultivate bio-innovation talents," adding, "We will actively support Siheung City to grow into a bio-specialized complex representing the Republic of Korea."
