Suwon City Expands 'Mosquito-Free Village Project' to 12 Locations
The Suwon City Public Health Center in Gyeonggi Province will expand the target areas for this year’s ‘Creating Mosquito-Free Villages’ project to 12 locations.
The mosquito-free village project began in 2019 at the Yeongtong-gu Public Health Center, and since the project started, mosquito complaints have significantly decreased. In 2024, the project expanded to cover 9 locations within the district.
This year, the project will focus on 12 key management sites: ▲ Manseok Park, Jowon 1-dong, Jeongja 1-dong (Jangan-gu) ▲ Seodun-dong, Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus, Seryu 3-dong (Gwonseon-gu) ▲ Ingye-dong, Dongmal Park, Godeung-dong (Paldal-gu) ▲ Gwanggyo Lake Park, Mangpo 1-dong, Yeongheung Forest Park (Yeongtong-gu), and the project will be carried out from April to November.
Suwon City will first investigate larval habitats such as septic tanks and rainwater drains, as well as adult mosquito habitats like dense bushes and shrubs, and then conduct intensive control measures at least once a week.
The mosquito-free village project simultaneously controls larvae and adult mosquitoes within the mosquito life cycle of two weeks to reduce recurrence, and focuses on areas with high mosquito density to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
After the pilot project, mosquito complaints reported to the Yeongtong-gu Public Health Center significantly decreased. In 2024, mosquito complaints numbered 48, a 57.5% decrease compared to 113 complaints in 2019. Mosquito complaints in the key management areas of Gwanggyo Lake Park and Mangpo 1-dong dropped from 19 cases in 2019 to 4 cases in 2023.
