The policy forum for the establishment of the Korea Institute of Culture Technology, organized by Representative Min Hyungbae (Gwangsan-eul, Gwangju) of the Democratic Party of Korea, will be held on the 1st of next month at Seminar Room 1 of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building. The forum aims to discuss the necessity of establishing the Korea Institute of Culture Technology and strategies for future industries utilizing culture technology.

Recently, as advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), metaverse, spatial computing, and generative content are being combined with the cultural industry, the importance of culture technology (CT) has grown even further. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is also pursuing strategies to strengthen national cultural competitiveness through culture technology research and development (R&D) and industry promotion under the “Culture Korea 2035” vision.

Participants will examine the justification and roles for establishing the institute and seek ways to build a cooperative system among civil society, government, universities, and research institutions. Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon is expected to express his support for the establishment of the Korea Institute of Culture Technology in his congratulatory remarks and emphasize the future value of culture technology.

Yoon Jeongwon, Director of the Korea Culture Technology Research Institute at GIST, will deliver a keynote presentation on “The Necessity and Direction for Establishing the Korea Institute of Culture Technology: Overseas Cases and Implications.” Professor Woo Woontack of the KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology will present on “The Role and Operation Plan of the K-CT Research Institute in the Era of Culture Technology 3.0.” After the presentations, experts from the public, private, academic, and research sectors will gather to discuss in depth the roles and development strategies of the Korea Institute of Culture Technology.

Representative Min, who co-hosted the forum, stated, “The establishment of the CT Research Institute was a project that former President Roh Moo-hyun ambitiously pursued to systematically lay the foundation for culture technology, but it was scrapped during the Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye administrations and has remained stagnant for 18 years. Since culture technology is a key field that will determine the future of the K-content industry, we must actively support the convergence of advanced technology and cultural content through the establishment of a national-level specialized research institute.”

Meanwhile, the forum will be co-hosted by lawmakers Park Kyuntaek, Ahn Dogeol, Yang Moonseok, Yang Bunam, Jeon Jinsook, Jung Junho, Jung Jinwook, and Cho Incheol, with Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) and the Korea Culture Technology Research Institute serving as joint organizers.
