West Sea Coast Guard Implements Low Visibility Management Process During Foggy Season
Protecting "Maritime Safety" from Sea Fog
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Headquarters (Chief Lee Myungjun) announced on the 28th that it is operating a low-visibility situation management process during the fog season to prevent and respond to maritime accidents caused by poor visibility at sea, such as sea fog.
When dense sea fog is expected to cause low visibility at sea, fog prediction information is received in advance from the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration and delivered to five subordinate police stations.
The police stations that receive this information will analyze low visibility conditions within their jurisdictions using visibility meters, CCTV footage, and visual observation. Based on relevant laws, they will focus all efforts on preventing maritime accidents by controlling the departure and navigation of multi-use vessels (passenger ships, fishing boats, ferries, etc.).
In particular, when sea fog occurs, the main entry and exit ports, frequent fog areas, and accident-prone zones for multi-use vessels will be designated as hazardous waters, and intensive safety management will be carried out for departing and navigating vessels in these areas.
Meanwhile, the West Sea Coast Guard Headquarters, in cooperation with the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, has been operating a joint task force specializing in marine meteorology, which has reduced the number of maritime accidents caused by bad weather from 15 to 2 compared to the same period last year.
An official from the West Sea Coast Guard Headquarters said, "To prevent maritime accidents and ensure safety during low visibility, we ask that you refrain from unnecessary departures and navigation, and follow the safety measures of the departure and entry reporting agencies."
