From Genetics to Appropriate Technology... Science Night Held in Gwangju
First Lecture of "Friday Science Touch" to Be Held on the 28th
Starting with Stories of Zebrafish and Microscopes
The Gwangju National Science Museum is resuming its year-round lecture series, "Friday Science Touch," which shares the allure of science with local residents. Co-hosted with the Gwangju Science Culture Association, the first lecture of this year will be held on the 28th at 6:30 PM in the Imagination Hall of the Gwangju Science Museum.
"Friday Science Touch" is a program designed to share national R&D achievements with citizens and promote the popularization of science. This year, a total of 18 diverse science lectures are scheduled to take place through November.
The opening lecture will be on the topic "Zebrafish: A Fantastic Model for Genetic Research in Vertebrates." Professor Choi Seokyong from Chonnam National University College of Medicine will explain in an easy and engaging way why the zebrafish, a tropical fish with stripes resembling those of a zebra, is used as a key model in genetic research. Professor Choi graduated from Chonnam National University College of Medicine, earned a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from the State University of New York, and is currently teaching at Chonnam National University.
Before the main lecture, there will be an introductory talk titled "Appropriate Technology that Saves the World: Ultra-Compact Microscopes." It will be led by teacher Jung Jaeseong from Yulgok Elementary School, and there will also be a hands-on session where children and families can make simple microscopes together.
The lectures are free and open to everyone, with advance online reservations for up to 150 people on a first-come, first-served basis through the Gwangju National Science Museum website. Researcher Lee Jaeyoung said, "This year, we have prepared even richer topics and experiment-focused lectures compared to last year," adding, "It will be a special time to enjoy and learn science."
