On-site inspections to prevent the distribution of chemical products used in daily life that have not been verified for safety will be strengthened.
The Yeongsangang Basin Environmental Office announced on the 27th that from the 1st of next month to November 30th, it will conduct intensive inspections and promotional activities for the 'safety-confirmed household chemical products' at businesses handling household chemical products in the Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeju regions.
'Ansaengpum' refers to 44 types of household chemical products such as cleaners, air fresheners, and adhesives that are commonly used in daily life and have been determined by the Minister of Environment to pose risks based on risk assessments. The Environmental Office inspects whether regulations are followed to prevent the illegal manufacture and distribution of these products and to ensure consumers can use them safely.
According to the Yeongsangang Environmental Office, the number of suspected violations involving Ansaengpum in the region has been increasing each year, rising from 116 cases in 2021 to 223 cases in 2022, nearly doubling. Most violations were relatively simple regulatory breaches such as missing labeling information, advertising unapproved items, and using restricted phrases. These are mainly attributed to a lack of awareness of the regulations among small business owners and individual sellers.
If violations are detected, the Environmental Office imposes administrative measures such as banning the manufacture, import, and sale of the products, issuing recall orders, and filing criminal charges. In addition, it works with organizations such as the Korea Online Shopping Association to block the distribution of illegal products and discloses information about the violating products on the 'Choroknuri' website.
This inspection will be operated by dividing the Gwangju-Jeonnam and Jeju regions and assigning responsible managers to each area. Along with blocking illegal distribution, promotional activities regarding the regulations will be strengthened. The office will distribute informational materials in cooperation with related organizations and conduct promotional activities at event venues. It will also visit businesses directly to inspect products suspected of violations and provide regulatory guidance.
Director Kim Youngwoo stated, "Since household chemical products directly affect public health and the environment, we will strengthen the management system to ensure that only products meeting safety standards are distributed," adding, "We will create a safer living environment by combining monitoring with regulatory guidance for businesses handling these products."
