Yoon said, "I am deeply grateful for the efforts of related organizations to improve the walking environment for children. However, despite many efforts, there are still children's protection zones that require management," and clarified the purpose of her remarks by saying, "Measures to ensure children's safety must be perfect, not just the best."
She continued, "Children walk on roads without sidewalks on their way to and from school, and sometimes even walk between buildings and cars," emphasizing, "A drastic improvement in the pedestrian environment is necessary to guarantee children's safety on their way to and from school at all times."
Through her speech, Yoon called for expanding the installation of CCTV to monitor illegal activities, establishing safe pick-up and drop-off zones, and improving road surface markings.
She also stated that it is necessary to actively promote and encourage compliance with traffic laws within children's protection zones. In addition, she proposed the implementation of effective policies such as installing 'traffic calming facilities' to prevent traffic accidents involving children.
'Traffic calming facilities' refer to techniques such as narrowing lanes, zigzag roads, speed bumps, and textured pavement on roads. These facilities are designed to reduce vehicle speed and traffic volume, prioritizing the convenience and safety of pedestrians.
