Busan Regional Patriots and Veterans Affairs Office to Hold 10th West Sea Defense Day Ceremony on the 28th
Commemorating the 55 West Sea Defense Heroes, Including the Victims of the Cheonan Attack
The Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Director Namil Lee) will hold the 10th West Sea Defense Day Commemoration Ceremony at 2 p.m. on the 28th in the main auditorium of Busan City Hall.
This event is co-hosted by the Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and Busan Metropolitan City, and organized by the Busan Branch of the Korea Disabled Veterans Organization.
Approximately 700 people, including Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel, veterans and civic group officials, will attend. The ceremony will include the screening of a roll call video honoring the 55 West Sea Defense heroes, commemorative speeches, a reading of a tribute poem, and a commemorative performance. The ceremony will also be broadcast live on YouTube.
‘West Sea Defense Day’ was established by the government in March 2016 to honor the 55 heroes who sacrificed their lives in the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong (June 29, 2002), the sinking of the Cheonan (March 26, 2010), and the shelling of Yeonpyeong Island (November 23, 2010). To raise nationwide security awareness and reaffirm the commitment to national defense, the government designated the fourth Friday of every March, based on the date of the Cheonan sinking, which saw the highest number of casualties, as an official memorial day.
