Seongnam City Establishes Medical Expense Support System
Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 26th that it will implement a health promotion project for self-support workers, providing up to 1 million KRW for dental treatment or up to 300,000 KRW for advanced health checkups.
This project, introduced for the first time this year, aims to support disease prevention and health management for self-support workers, a medically vulnerable group, to help them maintain stable economic activities.
To this end, the city has established a cooperative system with the Seongnam Mannam Regional Self-Support Center and decided to allocate 10 million KRW from Seongnam City's self-support activation support fund as the budget.
The support targets are basic livelihood security recipients and lower-income groups who have been engaged in self-support work for more than three months in the business units operated by the Seongnam Mannam Regional Self-Support Center.
The center selected 17 self-support workers classified as high-risk in terms of dental or health conditions, providing dental treatment costs (up to 1 million KRW) to 7 people and advanced health checkup costs (up to 300,000 KRW) to 10 people starting next month.
A Seongnam City official stated, “With the establishment of a medical expense support system for self-support workers, we will alleviate the difficulties of those who cannot receive dental treatment due to financial burdens and those who received secondary medical opinions from general health checkup results. After reviewing the effectiveness and satisfaction of this project, we plan to gradually expand its scale.”
The Seongnam Mannam Regional Self-Support Center (Dandae-dong, Sujeong-gu) operates 18 business units and 9 self-support enterprises across the region, including lunchbox manufacturing, cafes, snack bars, laundries, reusable container washing, and convenience stores.
Currently, a total of 254 basic livelihood security recipients and lower-income groups are engaged in self-support work while learning professional skills.
