The AI CNC Demonstration Center was established as part of the project to foster specialized clusters for materials, parts, and equipment (Sobu-jang). With a total project cost of 31.1 billion KRW, the center consists of one basement floor and five above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 3,405 square meters, and is equipped with 73 pieces of equipment across 45 types. The project aims to secure reliable solutions for each process by applying AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology to domestically produced CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) systems and machine tools.
CNC refers to both the upper-level controller, which acts as the brain by automatically controlling all functions of a machine tool with an embedded computer processor, and the servo motors and spindle motors, which serve as the hands and feet. Although it is a core component that determines machining quality, domestic products have lacked technological competitiveness and reliability, resulting in dependence on imports.
Through this project, it is expected that the localization of CNC and the smart transformation of domestic machine tools based on AI will open up new global markets, and that joint use among industry, academia, and research institutes will enhance industrial advancement and strengthen the technological innovation capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises.
Changwon Special City Mayor Hong Nam-pyo stated, "The AI CNC Demonstration Center will not only enhance the competitiveness of domestic manufacturing in the rapidly changing global environment, but also serve as a crucial outpost for advancing the technological capabilities of strategic industries such as future mobility and robotics based on precision machinery. We will focus our administrative efforts to lead world-class manufacturing innovation and achieve sustainable growth through the advancement and sophistication of our key industries."
