Changwon National Industrial Complex Achieves Milestone as Korea's First Culture-Leading Industrial Complex
Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, Expresses His Reflections:
"A New Leap for Changwon Through the Convergence of Future Industry and Culture"
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced on the 25th that the Changwon National Industrial Complex has been finally selected in the 2025 Cultural Leading Industrial Complex public contest, which is jointly organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
This selection was a valuable achievement made possible by the combined efforts of Changwon City, Gyeongsangnam-do, the Gyeongnam Regional Headquarters of Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, the Changwon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, local members of the National Assembly, and participating companies.
In particular, it is evaluated that the strategic policy implementation of the contest consortium and the strong determination of the mayor of Changwon led to this final selection.
With this selection, the city plans to transform the Changwon National Industrial Complex into an innovative space where culture and industry converge. In particular, the city will actively promote the Cultural Leading Industrial Complex project so that young workers can enjoy various cultural experiences within the industrial complex.
Through this project, the city aims to establish the identity of the Changwon National Industrial Complex and systematically promote three initiatives: 'Living Space' for the creation of cultural and convenience facilities and landscape improvement within the industrial complex, 'Working Space' for expanding support facilities for companies and workers, and 'Enjoyment Space' to transform the industrial complex into a place where culture can also be enjoyed.
To realize this, Changwon City will promote the project based on three strategies: creating new cultural hubs (Brand New), renovating aging industrial complexes (Renewal), and providing high-quality cultural experiences (Upgrade).
The Cultural Leading Industrial Complex project for the Changwon National Industrial Complex will begin consultations with implementing agencies by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport starting this April. Once the consultations are completed, agreements will be signed with each implementing agency, followed by administrative procedures such as investment review and budgeting, after which development and cultural/art projects will be pursued during the designated project period.
Changwon City, together with Gyeongnam Province, Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, Gyeongnam Culture and Arts Foundation, and Changwon Cultural Foundation, plans to receive 26.8 billion KRW in national funding over four years to develop the Changwon National Industrial Complex as a representative cultural leading industrial complex of Korea.
Through this project, the Changwon National Industrial Complex is expected to establish itself as a future-oriented industrial complex model combining existing machinery and defense industries with the cultural content industry. The city plans to promote the influx of young people and revitalize the local economy by expanding creative spaces and attracting cultural complex facilities within the industrial complex.
Mayor Hong stated, "The Changwon National Industrial Complex will grow into a culture-industry convergence model with global competitiveness," and added, "The future industrial complex should be more than just a workplace; it should be a space where work, culture, and leisure coexist."
He further expressed his expectations for the selection, saying, "With this Cultural Leading Industrial Complex project, Changwon is now ready to leap forward as a global city of industrial and cultural convergence, not just in Korea but worldwide."
