KAIST "Ranked 10th Worldwide Among Universities for US Patent Registrations... 1st in Korea for 3 Consecutive Years"
KAIST ranked 10th among world universities with the most patents registered in the United States. It has held the top spot among domestic universities for three consecutive years.
KAIST announced on the 25th that it registered a total of 176 patents in the United States last year, achieving this ranking. In the U.S., the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has been publishing an annual ranking of the top 100 universities worldwide that have received U.S. patents since 2013.
The Top 100 Worldwide Universities ranking is based on patent information registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
KAIST classifies employee inventions into five technical fields: device, digital, mobility, chemistry, and bio-medical. Patent attorneys and Technology License Officers conduct invention evaluations for each field.
Additionally, inventions are graded according to their technical and commercial viability, and high-value patents with high utilization potential are selected and supported for registration in major countries worldwide, including the U.S., China, and Europe.
For example, KAIST has registered numerous international standard patents for video compression technology not only in Korea but also in the U.S., Japan, and China. As of last year, it has earned over 10 billion KRW in cumulative royalties solely from these standard patents.
