Jung Won-oh, Seongdong District Mayor, Elected as the 5th Chairperson of the Local Government Council for Gentrification Prevention
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced on the 16th that Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, was elected as the 5th term president of the "Local Government Council for Preventing Gentrification and Sustainable Communities," which consists of 33 local governments nationwide.
Mayor Jung Won-oh of Seongdong-gu has been leading pioneering policies to prevent the adverse effects of gentrification. As part of these efforts, in June 2016, he established the "Local Government Council" for joint responses to gentrification among local governments, and after serving as president in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th terms, he has continued cooperation among local governments for regional coexistence.
He was re-elected as the 5th term president and has been leading the "Local Government Council" since March 16.
The main functions of the "Local Government Council" include ▲ promoting mutual cooperation among local communities and joint responses to gentrification issues ▲ policy proposals regarding the enactment and revision of laws related to gentrification prevention ▲ promoting awareness and expanding social consensus on gentrification prevention.
The "Local Government Council" has continuously pursued activities such as issuing statements urging legal enactment and revision, conferences, and forums to improve systems and expand social consensus to prevent the adverse effects of gentrification. It has achieved results such as leading the revision of the Commercial Building Lease Protection Act and the enactment of the Regional Commercial District Coexistence and Revitalization Act, a gentrification prevention law.
Nevertheless, due to the need for supplementation as illegal rent increases exploiting legal blind spots occur, the "Local Government Council" prepared institutional improvement plans for three laws related to gentrification prevention?▲ Commercial Lease Act ▲ Regional Commercial District Act ▲ Real Estate Transaction Act?through research projects.
Subsequently, in November 2023, together with like-minded organizations, the council issued a joint statement urging related law amendments, and in December of last year, held a legislative forum for regional community coexistence and gentrification prevention, urging prompt legislation.
Seongdong-gu is striving to expand the management area to the entire Seongsu-dong and establish customized policies by district to continuously promote gentrification prevention policies. It plans to establish and announce a sustainable development plan, including strategies for gentrification prevention and mutual cooperation among local communities, within the first half of this year.
