Trump and Putin Agree to Halt Attacks on Energy Facilities... Russia Rejects '30-Day Ceasefire Proposal'
Putin Demands Halt to Weapons and Intelligence Support for Ukraine
Immediate Start of Negotiations for Complete Ceasefire and Permanent Peace
Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on the 18th (local time). However, he did not accept the '30-day ceasefire plan' to pause the Russia-Ukraine war for one month, which was the main topic of discussion between the two leaders that day.
The White House announced in a statement that after a 90-minute call, the two leaders "agreed on a ceasefire for energy and infrastructure." It added that they decided to "begin negotiations for a Black Sea maritime ceasefire, a complete ceasefire, and permanent peace," and that peace talks would start "immediately" in the Middle East.
The call focused primarily on discussing the ceasefire plan to pause the Ukraine war for 30 days. Earlier, the U.S. and Ukraine agreed on the 30-day ceasefire plan on the 11th in Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, President Trump dispatched Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow on the 13th to pressure President Putin to accept the ceasefire plan. Although there were expectations that an agreement on the 30-day ceasefire would be reached during the call between Presidents Trump and Putin, Russia only agreed to a limited ceasefire related to attacks on energy facilities.
During the call, President Putin presented several conditions to President Trump for accepting the ceasefire plan, including the cessation of foreign weapons and intelligence support to Ukraine. He also demanded a halt to Ukraine's recruitment of new soldiers.
